Airborne Viking Ship Clears Rooftops

The Modulift modular spreader system has recently been utilised by Meade Crane Services Ltd to assist in the transportation of the replica Viking ship, the 'Sea Stallion of Glendalough', to the National Museum at Collins Barracks in Dublin.

Due to restricted access to the Museum, the intricate operation involved lifting the 10 ton Viking ship over the top of the museum buildings with the help of two Modulift spreaders.

After setting sail from its home in Denmark, the Sea Stallion arrived in Dublin Docks, where Meade Crane Services Ltd managed the logistics of several complex lifts to safely lift the vessel from the water and transport it to the Museum, where it will be on display until next summer.

Modulift Design & Consulting, manufacturers of Modulift, supplied two Modulift 70 spreaders to assist with the operation. As part of the company's heavy range, the Modulift 70 has been specifically designed for applications such as lifting heavy boat and plant and machinery handling. It provides a span capability of up to 12m in increments of 500mm and a maximum load capacity of 70 tons at a 9m span. The Modulift 70 can operate at up to 12m pan with reduced capacity.

'Due to the age of the Sea Stallion, one of the main priorities when organising the logistics of the multiple lifts involved was to ensure a minimal amount of stress and strain was placed on the vessel throughout the operation, said Fergus Meade, managing director of Meade Crane Services Ltd.

'Choosing Modulift enabled us to utilise its inherent flexibility, which sets the system apart from standard fixed length spreaders, and accommodate the complex lifts involved in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner.'

A single Modulift set can be used for lifting loads of various size and weight, by connecting sections to make different size beams, enabling the same spreader to be used for different loads and projects.

The Modulift range comprises 16 systems, which provide lifting capacity for weights between 2 to 3,000 tons and lengths from 200mm to 53m.
