Danish Repower for Peterhead Trawler

MAN Diesel PrimeServ’s Service Center at Frederikshavn in Denmark successfully completed a major re-engining job aboard the Scottish fishing vessel.

Sea trials were held in the waters off Frederikshavn this summer for the final tuning-in and adjustments of the main engine, propulsion equipment and engine room auxiliary systems. The sea trials were followed by a short test fishing operation to check proper functionality of all fishing gear, winches and hydraulics before the vessel commenced to the deep sea fishing banks in the North Sea waters between Norway and Scotland.

Four months earlier skipper John Buchan decided to have  his Peterhead UK based vessel towed to Denmark after a severe main engine breakdown. Repair and replacement options were considered and evaluated with regard to availability, timing and overall costs.

The solution settled for was a reconditioned second hand complete propulsion unit with engine and close coupled reduction gearbox, to be fitted to drive the existing shaft line, propeller and power take-off installation.

The engine installed is a MAN Diesel eight cylinder L23/30-KV type. It has also been planned, at the next dry docking of Ocean Venture II, to change the existing four propeller blades to an updated design optimised for operation with the ship's existing propeller nozzle.

For the physical engine replacement it was necessary to cut out a section of the port side hull plates and tank section at the engine compartment. The original engine

was disassembled from all pipe connections and the foundation, lifted, turned and rolled out on rails in a sideways direction over the port side of the vessel for the final crane lift. The replacement engine went in the same way.

The new engine has been hooked up to the vessel’s original auxiliary circuits and control systems, which were slightly modified to fit. The original seawater cooling system was, however, completely rebuilt to fresh water cooling via a newly installed central cooling system.

Other major overhaul and conversion tasks included an overhaul of the stern tube seals with new sealing rings by IHC Lagersmit BV. Electrical connections from the engine to ship's systems were finished by Frederikshavn Marine El.

Generators were overhauled by Frederikshavn El-motor Service and the bow thruster was overhauled by Power Works ApS. Refrigeration plant was overhauled by Victor Industries of Frederikshavn, tanks and piping systems cleaned by Frederikshavn Rengøring Consortie, insulation works finished by Norisol A/S, foundation drawings were done by Hauschildt Marine A/S, and blasting and painting carried out by DOF ApS.
