Dredging Restores Depth at Island Harbour

Jenkins Marine Ltd and Land & Water Services have been working together on a  challenging project to dredge the Island Harbour Marina in the Isle of Wight. The works, which started in April, are due for completion by the end of this month, by which time some 23,000m3 of dredged material will have been removed and disposed of.

Island Harbour Marina is situated at the upper end of the River Medina, Due to shallow water and the tidal range of the estuary at this location it is necessary for the marina to have lock gates in order to maintain adequate depth for berth holders within the marina.

The marina also has a smaller river running into its basin which has caused silt accumulation over the years, making dredging of the marina a necessity. The lock gates cause a restriction to length and width which prevent larger work vessels from entering the marina.

Land & Water has been dredging the marina basin using a 13 ton long reach excavator on a pontoon which loads dredged material into hoppers which are pushed by tug to an offloading machine. The offloader fills dump trucks which transport the material to a holding pit close to the lock gates. From here the material is transferred to Jenkins Marine’s waiting split hopper barge ‘M/V Needles’. Once filled with 300m3 of material, Needles steams south east of the island to a disposal ground off the Nab Tower.

Operation of the vessel is tidally restricted and loading may only occur during a short window over high water.
