Those with an interest in the diverse aspects of coastal zone management are facing increasing challenges as a result of development pressure, environmental impacts and increasing risk arising from the impacts of climate change. With the objective of achieving sustainable development, many nations are progressing and implementing legislation or policies to fulfil this aim. Within the European Union, all Member States were required to submit national strategies for international coastal zone management last year, whilst in England, a Marine Bill is currently under active consideration and may be included in the Queen’s Speech this autumn.

The purpose of the conference, through its six sessions, is to highlight innovation and best practice in the field of coastal management but, importantly, also to assist implementation through the exchange of ideas and information. The conference will include presentations on a number of current issues, including coastal policies and management arrangements; managing the dynamic coast; mapping, monitoring and new technologies; coastal and estuary engineering; coastal environmental management and enhancement; and achieving better integrated coastal zone management. Debate will be encouraged and time included in the schedule for discussion.

The half-day morning Technical Visit on Friday 2 November will visit key locations in Cardiff, including a Waterbus tour around Cardiff Bay and a visit to the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
