Sea Cadet’s Double Diploma Distinction
30 Jul 2008
A 17 year old from Sea Cadet and pupil at Nonsuch High School for Girls in Sutton UK was presented with two BTEC First Diplomas by local Member of Parliament, Siobhain McDonagh.
Rebecca Carter of the Merton Sea Cadet Unit is the first Cadet in the country to achieve both the First Diploma in Public Services and the First Diploma in Music through the Cadet Vocational Qualifications Office (CVQO). To top it all, she gained a distinction in both.
Rebecca received her diplomas from Siobhain McDonagh MP, who is a keen advocate of the Cadet Forces and their commitment to improving young people's life chances. During the presentation the MP said, ‘I would strongly recommend the opportunity to earn BTEC First Diploma to every Cadet. Qualifications are real currency for your future.’
Former First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Alan West GCB DSC D Univ, also made a speech as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CVQO. He said, ‘As a member of the Sea Cadets, young people learn discipline, structure and a sense of pride. Through the BTEC First Diploma they also learn interview and presentation skills, and gain real confidence in their own abilities. These are valuable life skills which will help cadets in their academic life and future employment.’
Since its inception in 2002 some 8,000 Cadets have gained a BTEC First Diploma in Public Services through CVQO. The Music Diploma was launched through CVQO in 2006 and Rebecca is the first Cadet to have achieved both. Each Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs (A*-C grade).
As well earning the equivalent of eight GCSEs in her own time (adding to 11 subjects already gained), Rebecca is studying for A levels in English literature, history, French and general studies and working towards her Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award through the Sea Cadets. She is a radio presenter on Youth FM and has received her 200 hour certificate from the Millennium Volunteers.
