Propulsion specialist Schottle GmbH & Co. KG has been reorganized, with a new corporate structure to meet the increasing demands of shipbuilding worldwide. With effect from 29 June 2007, Schottel’s headquarters in Spay/Rhine and Schottel Antriebstechnik GmbH in Wismar have been merged to form the new Schottel GmbH, with its registered office in Spay and branches in Wismar and Hamburg. Schottel Schiffsmaschinen GmbH, also based at Wismar, will continue to develop and manufacture reliable, high efficiency controllable pitch propeller systems as an independent company.
With an exceptionally high level of orders and a booming demand for Schottel products worldwide, work will commence this year to build a new production shop in China and a warehouse in Wismar. The company is also examining other opportunities to increase production capacity.
Griffin Towage & Marine, the growing independent tug company based in Poole UK, now lists four tugs in its fleet. The latest addition is the ‘Knighton’, a vessel well known around the UK coastline. Formerly operated in Scotland as the ‘Duchess’ (ex ‘Red Duchess’ 2006, ex ‘Accomplice’ 1998, ex ‘G.W. 94’, ex ‘Phoenix’, ex ‘Ireland’) the single screw tug has a bollard pull of 10 tons and speed of 9.5 knots. The Griffin Towage fleet also includes the ‘Kingston’, ‘Princeton’, and ‘Goliath’.
An order has been placed with gebr Kooiman of Zwijndrect, the Netherlands for a new multi-purpose tug to be operated by W Bouwman Marine Service BV. The twin screw tug, to be named ‘Andre B’, will be 31.1m long with a 9.5m beam and be powered by two 1,700 kW main engines. Four fishtail rudders will be fitted along with a 300 kW bow thrusters. A bollard pull of 45 tons is anticipated and delivery is scheduled for March 2008.
Smit Harbour Towage Vancouver Inc is to receive a considerable boost to its fleet in the port of Vancouver with the imminent arrival of the tug ‘Smit Clyde’. The new addition is a Damen ASD Tug 3111, built in 2000 and transferred from the Smit Harbour Towage fleet in Rotterdam. The 30.6m tug is on route under its own power and due to arrive in the middle of this month. Smit Clyde has main engines of 4,908 bhp and a maximum bollard pull of 65 tons
