Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

Greek Chart Dispute

Louis Hellenic Cruises has blamed inaccurate charts for the loss of its ship Sea Diamond off the Greek island of Santorini. The vessel hit a reef and sank last April, killing two French passengers.

The company claims to have uncovered significant discrepancies between official charts of the accident area and a seabed survey it had commissioned privately.

In particular, the actual location of the fatal reef was found to be 131m away from the shore, and not 57m as marked on the chart. Moreover, the water depth at the point of impact was 5m and not 22m as shown on the map. A Louis statement late last year said that the findings justified its decision to support the competence of the ship's master, who is facing criminal charges.

The Hydrographic Service of the Hellenic Navy, which is responsible for nautical charts of Greek waters, has reportedly unofficially responded by saying that its charts are the only accredited ones and the accuracy of any other charting project should be questioned. However, Louis' superindentent George Koumpenas has reiterated that charts from the Navy were being used by Sea Diamond at the time of the incident.
