That’s the message from key speakers at the 5th annual Green Ship Technology conference, which takes place at the Hilton Rotterdam in the Netherlands on 11-12 March. The event will explore how to achieve an effective balance between the demands and benefits of environmentally sustainable shipping.

Current and future developments will be assessed with input from more than 40 representatives of shipowners, classification societies, port authorities, government, equipment manufacturers, consultants and academics.

Topics covering the latest eco-friendly regulatory and technical solutions range from air emissions and ballast water management to alternative fuels, propulsion improvements, cold ironing, waste recycling and a charterer’s criteria for good environmental standards.

Growing recognition of the human element in supporting such initiatives will be reflected with a debate on crew training requirements and a pre-conference workshop on March 10 promoting the role of marine environmental awareness in profitable day-to-day business.

A post-conference workshop led by DNV on March 13 will examine the implementation of environmental management systems with guidance on data and cost management, ISO 14000 and the regulatory framework.

Other highlights include the inaugural Green Ship Technology Award. Judged by a panel of shipowners, the award is open to systems manufacturers and will mark the most innovative technology put to use since last March to the benefit of the marine environment. The nominations deadline is 31 January.
