Dutch Cable Lay Project Awarded to Van Oord

Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord has been awarded a contract to lay a 150kV cable between Ellewoutsdijk and Terneuzen in its home country.

The contract is worth €23m and will be executed in joint venture with Visser & Smit Hanab. Van Oord’s share in the joint venture is 48%.

The client is public utilities company Delta Infra BV, and the project is due to start on 1 May, with completion scheduled for November 2008.

Two cable bundles will be laid across the river Westerscheldt. Van Oord will deploy the cutter suction dredger HAM 250, trailing suction hopper dredger Geopotes 14, side stone dumping vessel Frans, water injection dredger Jetsed and crane barge Viking (Paans).

Van Oord has also reported the start of dredging operations for the access channel to Banjarmassin on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia. A 15km long and 6m deep access channel will be dredged to the port of Banjarmassin.

Van Oord will deploy the trailing suction hopper dredger HAM 312, cutter suction dredger HAM 219 and water injection dredger HAM 922.

The contract is valued at some €27m, and the client is P T Sarana Daya Mandiri. Work is now under way and due to be completed in November 2008.
