Green Light for Expansion at Felixstowe
01 Apr 2008
Plans for a major expansion of the Port of Felixstowe in the UK which would increase capacity by 25% received backing recently from Suffolk Coastal District Council.
The Felixstowe South Reconfiguration project includes a rail connection and terminal plus dredging to deepen berths, and is expected to result in the creation of about 600 jobs.
The UK government granted planning permission for the project in 2006 but changes to the scheme have since taken place. Last month Suffolk Coastal District Council agreed the revised plans, with the work to be phased rather than done all at once.
The existing Dock Basin and Haven will be expanded by 28 hectares (69 acres) and an additional 3,000ft (910m) of quay wall will be created in the expansion.
