Sightseeing Power on the Cape d'Agde

Two new 12m purpose built sightseeing boats operated by Les Coches D'eau on the Cape d'Agde, a few kilometres from Montpelier in the south of France, have each been fitted with a pair of Perkins Sabre M92B engines.

Coupled to TwinDisc MG5050 transmissions, the engines power the stylish 60 seater boats at a leisurely three knots around the Mediterranean resort.

The 12m aluminium boats were designed by Fourre Technologies Marines and the decision by Les Coches D'eau’s owner, Monsieur Héry, to fit this engine is in keeping with his long standing tradition of relying on Perkins Sabre power.

The naturally aspirated four-cylinder, 4.4-litre, 86hp engine develops its maximum output at a very low stressed 2,400rpm and was chosen because of its smoothness and ease of manoeuvrability at low revs.

Compared with its predecessor, the M92, the M92B has increased torque capability, plus improvements to the torque curve of the engine to give up to 12% more at low speeds with backup increasing to 26%.

The M92B’s environmental characteristics were also a major consideration for Les Coches D'eau. The engine is fully compliant with the European Tier II gaseous and particulate pollutant emissions regulations. It has smoke levels that are barely visible to the naked eye, even with a cold start.

Thanks to several innovative design features, including a new cylinder block design and developments to the front end gear train, noise and vibration levels throughout the engine’s entire operating range, from idle through to full load rated speed, are also greatly reduced.
