Meiderich Tackles Re-engine Projects

Germany’s Meidericher Schiffswerft (MSW) in Duisburg, still going strong after 110 years in the business, has completed the latest in a series of complex small vessel re-engine projects.

A spokesman told MJ that the yard, founded in 1898, re-engined the inland vessel Willi Raab, installing an MTU 12V 4000 M60 engine and Masson MMW 7300 gearbox along with, for the first time ever, a diesel particle filter.

The contract was won on the back of two re-engine projects carried out last year. The motor ship Plochingen got a new MTU 4000 series engine and a Mercedes Benz OM 424 unit was installed in the bunker boat Büchting 2.

Earlier this year, MSW installed a Wärtsilä engine Type UD 25 V12 M5D on the motor ship Yvonne K. All the MSW re-engine projects included the renewal of cooling systems and pipework

Other notable recent projects at MSW have included the repair of bow damage on the river cruise ship Bellriva. The project was completed in just ten days, working in two shifts to keep out of service time to a minimum.

Well versed in unusual ship conversions, MSW also recently joined two 32.5m lighters together and converted the resultant vessel into a floating exhibition and event ship.

The yard also constructed and mounted a novel 40m long and 4.5m high billboard on the motor ship Helmut to advertise the latest bikini collection of a German clothing manufacturer. The billboard pictured a model in a bikini lounging along almost the entire length of the ship. Ten floodlights lit her up at night along the Rhine between Duisburg and Karlsruhe.

As part of a mobile service, in which MSW sends individual experts or teams abroad to handle jobs on site, new jets were installed recently in the pushboat Cetus on the River Seine for a French customer.

In another case, new sections were built at the yard and transported abroad to replace damaged sections on a client’s ship. 'MSW’s  mobile repair service, backed by a network of specialist firms, will help at any time abroad and will come right to the ship involved', the MSW spokesman told MJ.
