It was built in Cornwall as a multi-role vessel and received a major refit from Bay Marine which gave it two new Iveco NEF 450 common rail high pressure injection system electronic control main engines supplied by Marlin Marine Southampton and new gearboxes supplied by Marine & Industrial Transmissions Ltd of Kent, which has given it a cruising speed of 15 to 18 knots and a sprint speed of 26 knots.

The craft’s 12.5m by 5.0m dimensions and the shape of its hull provides a very stable working platform, with a large 5m by 4m area of clear aft deck. It has four cabins below and can sleep eight to ten persons in comfort.

The large wheelhouse is kitted out with a selection of sophisticated electronics and also provides ample seating for personnel and room for dive panels or survey equipment. A detachable observation platform, 6m seated eye line height meets JNCC standards, and an array of deck winches, brackets and clamps for assorted survey equipment makes the vessel highly versatile.

A new Palfinger 3 t/m crane has a lifting capability of 990 kg @ 3.45m and a total reach of 6m and there is a 900 kg winch with 60m of crane wire. A new HFL 6KVA silent generator complements the other Onan 6 KVA and 25cfm HP dive compressor. The hydraulic system was supplied by Spencer and Carter Falmouth.

Cousin Jack is licensed and operating under MCA Category 2, which enables Bay Marine to work up to 60 miles from any safe haven in the UK and Europe on a range of activities which include, diving, surveying, ROV deployment, marine conservation, personnel transfer and offshore ship supply, amongst many others.

Last year Cousin Jack undertook various operations such as supporting sub-sea archaeological excavation, support work for BBC filming operations and general dive support. It also worked in the Irish Sea alongside Fugro Seacore's ack-up 'Excalibur' on the Gateway project carrying personnel, equipment and supplies out of Barrow in Furness. More recently it has been engaged in survey operations on the UK's southwesr coast for CEFAS, work which has seen it deploying a video and camera sledge. Due to the success of theses operations they will be repeated later this year.
