JB celebrates 40 years with versatile workboat

John Bennetts, who runs JB Marine Services from Newquay in Cornwall UK, celebrated 40 years in the marine industry earlier this year with delivery of the of the 11m Blyth Catamaran 'Atlanta'.

Having deployed booms around the 'Torrey Canyon' in 1967, John Bennetts found himself deploying booms around the 'MSC Napoli' 40 years later.

When Atlanta was delivered, it went straight to work for DV Howells as a diving tender and debris collection vessel on wreck removal operations for the stricken containership.

Atlanta was fitted out by Warner Brothers at Bradwell on Sea, with the versatile, stable platform provided by the catamaran's 4.9m beam and 3.5 sq/m aft working deck lending themselves well to survey, salvage, crew transfer, dive support, and marine construction support duties.

The vessel is powered by twin 375hp Iveco marine diesels driving through conventional propellers for an economical working speed of 20 knots and a sprint speed of 25 knots.

The walk around wheelhouse is fitted out with Raymarine electronics as well as a chart table and a survey table. A hydraulic drum winch mounted on the wheelhouse roof works with an 'A' frame gantry at the stern for deploying instruments. Port and starboard double doors provide access over the stern.

An aluminium bow section gives the vessel additional potential to be deployed for offshore windfarm operations and a hydraulic crane can be mounted in response to demand.
