'Monogirl 2' takes on many roles

Scotland's Macduff Shipyards has delivered the 16.5m support tug/workboat 'Monogirl 2', which is operated by Svitzer Marine on behalf of Conoco Phillips, replacing an older vessel deployed at the Tetney Monobuoy crude oil tanker offloading facility in the mouth of the UK's River Humber.
'Monogirl 2' is equipped to perform a wide range of duties on the Humber.

Designed by Macduff Ship Design and classed ABS + A1 + AMS with Workboat Code category 3, the multi-role vessel will be deployed as a line boat, attaching the messenger from the tanker to the Monobuoy mooring hawser as the tanker approaches the Monobuoy. Monogirl 2 will also accept the Monobuoy end of the mooring hawser when it is released from the Monobuoy. This consists of three links of 76mm chain attached to the 55m grommet. The mooring is then taken to the larger workboat 'Spurn Haven 2' (SH2) and attached to the winch of that vessel.

Monogirl 2 will also provide personnel transport for berthing masters, crew, contractors and other passengers to and from Grimsby, SH2, Monobuoy and tankers. To gain access to the Monobuoy and some tankers, personnel board and leave over the bow. A suitable platform is thus arranged forward. For other tankers, personnel are transferred to pilot ladders rigged from that vessel. Therefore, further access points are arranged port and starboard at wheelhouse corners.

The newbuild will also transport stores for the SH2 and tankers, carried on the after deck. It will also carry out infrequent towing duties, usually over the stern but also over the bow. Monogirl 2 will frequently push against crude oil transfer hoses to position the turntable of the Monobuoy and the bow is designed to facilitate this role. It will be used to run wires from the SH2 four point mooring winch to the anchor pennant and will occasionally serve as a safety/standby boat in support of diving operations. In the event of a pollution incident at the Monbuoy, the boat will be used for clean up and dispersant spraying duties as required.

The steel hull craft was built with a kit by the Macduff yard's Profiling Division. twin screw propulsion is powered by Caterpillar 3406C marine diesels rated 322 hp at 1,800 rpm driving through ZF W325 gearboxes. Stern gear is by Kort Propulsion, with 1,300mm four blade propellers on Kort Optima fixed nozzle rings.

Deck equipment includes a Guerra 60.90 M2 foldable marine knuckle boom crane complete with winch supplied through Thistle Marine Peterhead and an anchor windlass from Hardy Engineering.

The wheelhouse is arranged with the helmsman's seat on the centre line, three separate seat to starboard, bench seats and table on the port side aft, and a mini galley. A full set of Furuno electronics is complemented by sailor VHFs, a GME EPIRB, Jotron TRON SART, Sea Marshall location system, and a Phonetek intercom system. The vessel is fitted out to a very high standard, with particular attention paid to sound insulation.
