IMO sets ECDIS deadlines

The International Maritime Organisation's Safety of Navigation sub-committee has finally agreed a series of deadlines for mandatory use of electronic chart display and information systems with a comprehensive timetable long-sought by bodies such as the classification authority, Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
For newbuilding passenger vessels of 500 gt and above and tankers of 3,000 gt and over, ECDIS will be compulsory from 1 July 2012 and for other newbuilding ships at dates up to 2014.
The corresponding phase-in period for existing vessels extends from 2014-2018, depending on type and size but there will be an exemption clause for vessels within two years of their end of life.
