UK gets Europe’s first artificial surf reef
29 Feb 2008
Construction of an artificial ‘surf reef’ off the south coast of the UK got under way early last month.
The surf reef at Boscombe beach in Bournemouth will be the first of its type in Europe, and is one of only four in the world.
Apart from creating the kids of wave required by surfers, the reef at Boscombe is also expected to play role in coastal defence and provide a habitat for marine life.
Construction of the £2.68m surf reef is expected to take three months to complete.
