Port radar solution hits Sunderland and Fowey
29 Jul 2008
Ledwood Technology has supplied a cost effective port radar system, Iris, to the Port of Sunderland and Fowey Harbour. The evolving system now includes all the features needed by a port, including record & playback, auto tracking, alarm zones, charts, AIS data input, CCTV, and VHF voice recording at a price comparable to a standard ship’s radar.
It also goes one step further in that the CCTV, AIS, VHF voice and radar recordings are all played back as one integrated file. The computer based system promises low initial cost followed by low maintenance costs.
The computer based system provides other benefits, such as the ability to network the radar to several displays, possibly in different locations or even different organisations. For example, the port radar displays can be located in Port Control, but the pilots and marina operators could have separate displays in their offices. It is particularly important to have radar where commercial traffic interfaces with leisure traffic.
The recent installation at the Port of Sunderland is part of the refurbished new port control room. The system includes S-57 charts, AIS overlay and record and playback. Captain Ian Duncan, the Port Manager/Harbour Master said, 'The radar display is located in our newly refurbished port control office and strengthens our increasingly busy port's control and monitoring facilities. Iris provides everything required in a port radar at a reasonable price and offers the flexibility for further expansion in the future if necessary.'
Another recent installation for Ledwood has been at Fowey Harbour where a new VHF recording system was introduced that can integrate with the existing Iris radar. During the installation, the pioneering residential cruise ship, The World, was in the picturesque port being covered by the Iris radar and integrated CCTV.
