The Royal Institute of Navigation has launched a bimonthly podcast, the Navcast, to broaden public interest in navigation issues.

The NavCast is the RIN’s first step into regular public service podcasting, and it aims to open people’s eyes to the importance of navigation in every sphere of their busy 21st century lives.

It provides a digest of the latest news in all areas of navigation, along with exclusive interviews with some of the leading figures who make that news. The first episode combines the latest news of Galileo, the launch of a new electronic charting service from the UK Hydrographic Office, an in-depth look at animal navigation, one of the hottest topics in navigation today , and an interview with Tristan Gooley, the first European ever to both sail across the Atlantic single handed and fly across it solo.

Based on the format of the RIN’s very popular membership magazine, Navigation News, the NavCast will be available as a free download or subscription from the popular iTunes store. It will also be available direct from the Institute’s new media website, the Nav Channel (www.navchannel.co.uk), which also hosts some of the best presentations from recent RIN events, covering every aspect of navigation from satnavs and road charging to AIS and eLORAN, from bird migration to air traffic management.

The NavCast was launched to coincide with two of the major shows in the navigation calendar, Seawork 2008 and AeroExpo.
