CEDA sets autumn dredging conference schedule

The Netherlands based Central Dredging Association (CEDA) has revealed a full autumn programme of events, with CEDA Dredging Days 2008 taking place in Antwerp on 1-3 October followed closely by the CEDA - MSI International Seminar on Environmental Aspects of Dredging, to be held in Tallinn, Estonia on 15-16 October.
The Belgian port city of Antwerp will host CEDA Dredging Days 2008.
The Belgian port city of Antwerp will host CEDA Dredging Days 2008.

Organised by the Belgian section of CEDA, the CEDA Dredging Days 2008 conference and exhibition is themed 'Dredging Faces Sustainability' and aims to raise the awareness of stakeholders to the effort made by the dredging world to sustainable development. Five technical sessions will address issues such as the extent to which the dredging industry can contribute to the fight against climate change, restore wetlands and revitalise estuaries, and contribute to economic growth compatibly with nature conservation in coastal waters. The third day will see a panel discussion on the theme of Dredging and Sustainable Development.

On the afternoon of 2 October, a technical visit will be made by boat and bus to Kruibeke-Bazel-Rupelmonde, a project which combines flood protection with the construction of estuarine environment. The visit is sponsored by one of the major Belgian dredging contractors, Jan De Nul, and is followed by a 'pub crawling' of downtown Antwerp sponsored by Belgium's DEME Group, which includes Dredging International. Complementing the conference, a small technical exhibition will be located in an area adjacent to the technical session room. Further information at www.dredgingdays.org.

Less than two weeks later, the Environment Commission of CEDA (CEC) and the Marine Systems Institute (MSI) of Tallinn University of Technology host a one and a half day international seminar on the environmental aspects of dredging at the Tallink Spa & Conference Hotel in Tallinn, Estonia. It will focus on the fast growing economies of Baltic countries, which are generating strong demand for dredging services for port expansion, offshore sand winning and wind farm construction as well as environmental clean-up. In view of the Baltic's highly sensitive ecosystem, such projects must be undertaken with due care for the environment.

The seminar will focus on monitoring the results of recent port expansion works in Tallinn, long term developments for the port and related environmental issues, and EIAs for large scale infrastructure projects.

This event includes a technical visit to the Port of Tallinn, with participants observing dredging work at Muuga Harbour. For further information visit www.cedaconferences.org/tallinn2008.
