MHPA to host BPA annual conference

The British Ports Association will hold its annual conference in Milford Haven on 8-9 October in an event hosted by the Milford Haven Port Authority. Non-BPA members are welcome to book for the open sessions and a trade exhibition will be held in conjunction with the conference.

The event at the recently opened Bluestones activity centre is scheduled to be launched by Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan, followed by a comprehensive update on UK port and transport policy by a speaker from the Department for Transport.

Chris Cain, airport project director for Cornwall CC will then address the theme of adapting to change based on his experiences in the airports sector.

A session looking to the future of Port Markets will be addressed by specialist speakers on bulk and coastal shipping, ro-ro and feeder traffic, the energy market which is highly topical in Milford Haven, as well as the growing UK cruise and leisure marine sectors.

The theme of Sustainable Development will see Andrew Wood present Natural England's view of the Marine Bill, Transport and the Environment. Martin Boyers of Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises will discuss Renewable Energy Business Opportunities. David Knott from the Port of Belfast will speak on Belfast Harbour: Creating a Carbon Neutral Port and SEAaT executive chairman Lars Carlsson will look at the role for ports in addressing air emissions from ships.

The theme of Navigational Safety and Port Operations will see MAIB chief executive Stephen Meyer discuss his agency's role. Jeremy de Halpert of Trinity of Trinity House will discuss new developments from the GLAs. Simon Rickaby of DV Howells will examine the marine response to hazardous and noxious substances whilst David Asprey of the Chamber of Shipping will speak on Section 31 appeals.
