Underwater noise is news in Southampton

The marine environment is subject to both natural ambient noise and man made noise from sources such as shipping, offshore oil and gas platforms, renewable energy generators, seismic surveys, piling, sonar, fisheries and marine aggregate extraction.

Environmental impact assessments for all of these activities require an understanding of the radiated noise from the activity and the background ambient noise, together with the means to assess the impact of the anthropogenic noise on receptors in the marine environment. These assessments allow the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures.

The Institute of Acoustics will be holding a conference on underwater noise, its measurement, impacts and mitigation from 14 to15 October 2008 at the Novotel Hotel, in Southampton UK. The conference is organised by the Institute’s Underwater Acoustics Group.

This conference is intended to address all of the issues from the methods used to characterise the ambient and radiated noise fields quantitatively, through to the means for assessing the impacts of the noise on marine fauna and the steps required for mitigation.

Keynote speakers include Douglas Cato, Defence Science and Technology, Australia, Craig Bloomer, JNCC UK and Ed Harland, Chickerell BioAcoustics.

There will also be the opportunity for Poster Presentations. Those interested in presenting a poster should contact ejharland@underwaternoise.info

One of the highlights of the conference will be the conference dinner which will be held on board the historic ship HMS Warrior, located in Portsmouth Historic Dockland.

The conference will be valuable for sonar developers / operators, the seismic survey industry, the marine construction and marine renewables industries, the offshore industry, the underwater research community, environmental researchers / consultants and marine biologists.
