First phase of works completed at Weston-Super-Mare
10 Jul 2008
The first phase of the £17m Weston-Super-Mare sea defences and seafront enhancements formally opened to the public in early May.
The work, undertaken at the ‘Marine Lake’ in the town, included rebuilding the causeway, installing new sluices, replacing steps with ramps, realigning the beach and dredging the lake.
The official cutting of the ribbon was performed by the chairman of North Somerset Council, Councillor David Shopland, with other senior representatives from the Council and main contractor, Birse Coastal, also in attendance.
Construction of the next phase of the project has now commenced and involves the installation of a scour protection apron at the toe of the existing sea wall between Knightstone Island and the Grand Pier. The whole project is due to be completed in March 2010.
