The Buddy, built by pollution control and waterway maintenance vessel specialist Liverpool Water Witch, is a twin hulled craft with a removable collection basket which has the capacity to pick up and store 1,000kg of floating debris and aquatic vegetation.

It can handle items varying from the hated shopping bags, to plastic bottles and other floatables. It will provide a tremendous asset for the general maintenance of the navigation, its structures, the tow path and operating mechanisms.

Collecting floating litter and garbage is efficient and easy. The debris collects in a basket which fits between the hulls and once full, can be lifted and tipped directly into a skip or waste container. For maximum versatility, a load carrying pod and deck plates can be fitted within minutes to provide a range of roles.

The highly manoeuvrable craft, which is powered by a four stroke outboard, also features wheel fenders to allow it to run against quay walls, where litter tends to collect. Additional optional equipment includes a weed cutter for aquatic weed control and a range of oil spill response equipment.

The craft features a large working deck area and has been fitted with a specially designed fold down bow ramp for loading of heavy equipment such as mowers and chippers. The safety handrails are easily removable for additional versatility. Hulls are constructed from 4mm marine grade aluminium for strength, long life and low maintenance. Handrails and deck plates are removable, and the vessel is available in a range of sizes up to 10m. A road trailer is also available for transport between sites or to avoid the need for a permanent berth.

Roy Chandler, director and chairman of Essex Waterways, noted his satisfaction with the Buddy's performance, saying, 'This vessel's collecting capability has far exceeded all of our working assumptions regarding the quantity of litter that can be collected safely in a given amount of time. The skimmer boat will definitely help accelerate the charity’s vision of restoring and maintaining the navigation for public benefit and to safeguard for future generations.'

A 7m version of the Buddy with full wheelhouse is currently in build for Ronautica Middle East for operation in The Pearl, Qatar. This ambitious offshore development covering 985 acres of reclaimed land will incorporate an international yachting hub with three marinas and 700 boats.
