Big Lift Capability Goes to GOMS

Located on the Sitiawan River, Grade One Marine Shipyard (GOMS) of Lumut, Malaysia, wanted to acquire a 700C Marine Travelift in order to expand its existing business of refitting and repair services and also increase its capability to service vessels up to 700 tons.

Marine Travelift had previously manufactured an 800 ton model which has been operational in Singapore since 2001. However, the 700C (their second largest machine) is the first, electronically controlled, sixteen all-wheel steer machine to be built at the Sturgeon Bay facility in Wisconsin, and has significantly benefited from technological advances.

The developments have resulted in a machine that remains maneuverable whether carrying the maximum payload or not. The unit can carousel 180° in an area no larger than the boat it is lifting, and also has a 55° crab steering mode which allows the machine to be steered side-ways. Both carousel and crab steering are particularly advantageous when space is at a premium.

Fabrication, assembly and testing took place over an 18 month period at Wisconsin. During the production months, GOMS installed launching piers on the Sitiawan waterfront, while a purpose built hangar was erected within the confines of the shipyard, initially for receiving the 24 containers in which the machine was shipped before being used for the continuing repair and refit work.
