Hydrographic Survey

World Hydrography Day

Support and awareness of the International Hydrographic Organization's capacity building programme for improving hydrography and charting globally is the theme of this year's UN decreed World Hydrography Day on 21 June.

Nine commemorative posters showing examples of various worldwide projects and initiatives can be downloaded from the Monaco based Organization's website (www.iho.shom.fr).

Planned celebrations include a one day ceremony in Lisbon on 24 June organised by the IHO and hosted by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). To be attended by representatives of leading world hydrographic organisations and institutes, it will also mark the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations in the interests of improving the general safety of maritime traffic.

In London, the UK Hydrographic Office is to hold an evening reception at Trinity House on 18 June. Presided over by Chief Executive Mike Robinson and national Hydrographer, Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff, it will also feature presentation of the UKHO's annual Alexander Dalrymple Award for outstanding individual dedication and contribution to world hydrography. Further afield, in Canberra, the Royal Australian Navy's Hydrographic Service and The Australasian Hydrographic Society are to join forces on 21 June for a Hydrographers Ball.
