First pile for new quay at IHC Krimpen Shipyard

The councillor for spatial planning at Krimpen aan den IJssel in the Netherlands drove the first pile last month for the new completion quay at IHC Krimpen Shipyard. The ceremony launched a major construction project at the yard.
The major construction project at the IHC Krimpen Shipyard is due to be operational by the end of this year.

The completion quay, with unloading facility, is 285m long and will have a 60 ton crane and a 6 ton construction crane when it goes into operation in December. The first ship to be moored there will be the 'Oleg Strashnov', a 5,000 ton crane vessel due for launching in May 2009. The Krimpen Shipyard is currently using the Hollandia completion quay, which is located next to the yard.

Over the months ahead, work will not be confined to the IHC Krimpen Shipyard's completion quay. Also under build is a panel production hall for panels that will be used to construct ship sections and a service centre to accommodate head office staff, suppliers and sub-contractors.

Arjan Klijnsoon, the director of IHC Krimpen Shipyard said, 'The aim of these innovations is to integrate our working processes and to make the most of the space in order to enhance returns. Increasing demand has made these extensions necessary if we are to continue to serve our clients as quickly as possible.'

The extension of the yard is timely. With the shipbuilding sector booming, IHC Krimpen Shipyard is one of the first in Europe to expand again. The company's order book is full until late 2010, so as well as developments on the ground, demand for staff is rising also.

IHC Krimpen Shipyard recently acquired its own training school where staff with basic qualifications can receive further training, making them into complete professionals with the skills needed for a career in shipbuilding.
