Brighter light shines across the Kattegat

The harbourmaster on Denmark's Læsø Island has replaced the incandescent bulbs and lampchanger in a conventional warning lantern with Tideland Signal's new MaxiHALO-60 LED flasher assembly in order to achieve a brighter light, giving better visibility across the Kattegat sea between that country and Sweden.

The 300mm lantern was originally fitted with 12V 0.77A lamps and is mounted on a 5m pole at the front of the pier where ferries enter Læsø harbour. It shows a red light against a red triangle background, which was sometimes difficult to see in bad weather or conditions of poor visibility.

Looking for an economical solution, the harbourmaster approached Tideland Signal, which suggested the new MaxiHALO-60 unit with an AC\DC converter which produces sufficient candela for a range of 4nm in the original red lens, even with a degree of background lighting.

This solution has proved highly satisfactory both to shipping in the Kattegat and to the harbourmaster, who has solved his problem without the expense of a major redesign of the installation.

Tideland's new MaxiHALO-60 flasher assembly is designed is designed to permit an easy upgrade to LED technology without having to replace existing lanterns. Compatible with Tideland lanterns and with most other standard lanterns and rotating beacons, MaxiHALO-60 projects light in a 360º horizontal beam pattern. It offers user selectable power setting , 256 flash characxters, full monitor and control access and a dedicated program to set user options. Maximum LED life is assured by the constant power source, while the temperature controlled LED drive ensures uniform brightness as ambient temperatures change.
