  • Germany to upgrade Kiel Canal for €420m

    The German Government has approved spending of €420m up to 2018 to upgrade the spectacular Kiel Canal, which links the North Sea and the Baltic and is the world’s busiest manmade waterway. 

  • Prescott Lock progresses towards Olympic construction

    Work is progressing in East London on the first piece of infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics. Civil engineering contractor Volker Stevin is undertaking works at Prescott Lock at the gateway to Olympic Park. 

  • Replenishing the beach at Felixstowe

    Coastal defence work has started to replenish the beach and construct a series of groynes at Felixstowe Beach in Suffolk UK. 

  • Restoration completed at Liverpool's Brunswick Dock

    The restoration of sea locks and a lifting road bridge at the historic Brunswick Dock in Liverpool was completed earlier this month. The dock was originally built in 1838 to handle timber and grain and retains 268 acres of water now used as a marina.

    Torbay Harbour Authority in the UK is the first Solent Marine client to benefit from the company's new solution in modular walkway pontoon design for marina construction. 

  • Work starts on new Raasay Ferry Terminal

    Work starts this month on the new £12m Raasay Ferry Terminal, which will accommodate the Caledonian MacBrayne service sailing to Sconser. 

  • Marine services with environmental credentials at Seawork

    Marine industry electrical products specialist and Seawork exhibitor Maricer has recently completed the supply of electric and water service pedestals to the British Waterways Marinas Ltd (BWML) site at Diglis Basin in Worcester. 

  • New London mayor greenlights Thames project

    Within days of defeating Ken Livingstone to become the new Mayor of London last month, Boris Johnson has withdrawn his predecessor's legal challenge to the UK Government's decision to grant planning permission for the £250m Thames Gateway desalinisation plant and 9 km pipeline to the northeast of the city centre. 

  • Severn tidal power study underway

    The UK Government's Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) appointed contractors last month to undertake a Severn tidal power feasibility study which will determine the potential of a tidal energy generator in the Severn Estuary. 

  • Students invited to 'Brighten New Brighton'

    The multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Royal Haskoning is celebrating the opening of its North West UK regional office in Liverpool and the city's status this year as the European Capital of Culture by sponsoring a design competition with £2,000 going to the student creating the best proposal for a new waterside landmark at New Brighton.

    Oman's Port of Salalah has worked closely with Cavotec MoorMaster in implementing a vacuum based mooring system that allows for safe and swift mooring of ships of all sizes at the APM Terminals container facility at the Port. 

  • Eco-port proposal for Menorca marina

    Spanish marina builder Ronautica has recently delivered a tender proposal to the Balearic Port Authority for an ecological, self sufficient port based on renewable energies. 

  • Mountains move for Port Khorfakken expansion

    Port Khorfakkan is Sharjah’s sole port on the Indian Ocean and is dedicated entirely to container handling. Expansion works are well underway to extend the present quay of 1460m by a further 440m by main contractor Athena SA.
