UKHO launches new vector chart service
01 May 2008
While data is still being added to the system, the Office's chief executive Mike Robinson says it is already the most complete of its kind, comprising only official ENCs.
The single dedicated system overcomes present requirements to carry, maintain and use a mixture of ENC, Raster and paper charts drawn from multiple sources. Moreover, the use of sole official data means that a vessel fitted with twin ECDIS units can switch to using only electronic charts without paper back-up in all areas covered.
AVCS essentially brings together ENCs from the world's leading hydrographic offices (but not as yet China's). It then combines them with new GB coded ENC coverage produced by the UKHO to fill the gaps, created with permission from appropriate national authorities. Designed as folios along major international shipping routes, the system presently covers around 1,000 of the world's major ports but will extend to 2,000 by the end of this year.
Geographic folios are supported by flexible licensing arrangements covering 3, 6, 9 or 12 month options, users being provided with a complete set of CDs containing all service ENCs. Access to each ENC is controlled by a licensed permit key so that AVCS data is available at all times anywhere in the world.
The service, which is supported by online remote updating and a 24 hour emergency helpline at the UKHO's Taunton headquarters, has already been successfully tested aboard Royal Navy vessels as well as those operated by CMA CGM, James Fisher Everard and P&O. Options for free three month onboard trials are also available.
