Broads Forum welcomes coast defence commitment

The Broads Forum has welcomed a commitment by the Environment Agency in the UK to continue to maintain the defences of The Norfolk Broads for at least the next 50 years.

In a recent presentation to the Forum, Steve Hayman from the Environment Agency indicated that a further £7m of work is scheduled to take place over the next two years to continue the protection of the coast. The Broads Authority had successfully supported the Agency's bid for these resources.

The agreed policy in the Shoreline Management Plan supported by all the key agencies including the Environment Agency, the Broads Authority and Natural England, is that the coast should be protected for the next 50 years.

The Broads Authority in the UK is also celebrating the completion of £42,000 worth of extra dredging for the same money in the first five months of taking over the operation from long term contractor May Gurney.

Director of waterways Trudi Wakelin said this increased efficiency meant the authority would be looking to carry out 25% more dredging in this financial year, focusing especially on critical areas of shallow water such as Heigham Sound at the entrance to Hickling Broad and Oulton Broad.
