Briggs buys a triple hull Meercat
08 May 2008
Briggs required a work platform 15.5m long and 8.5m wide. The original design provided ample inherent strength to enable this, although the coupling pin configuration has been upgraded to combat the extra stresses resulting from the broader beam.
This design will allow the operator to use the vessel as either the conventional twin hulled unit, or as the beamier three hulled option. In either configuration, quick mobilisation upon delivery means the vessel is operational shortly after arriving on site. As the maximum lift requirement is 24 tons, cranage costs are kept to a minimum.
The relative ease of mobilising these vessels is one of the keys features to their desirability.
The most recently delivered Meercat is now operating in Norway. Having arrived two days after leaving Southampton, it was operational two hours after discharge from the ferry. The new owners are pleased with the vessel, which is to be used for pipelaying.
Peter Smith, MD of Meercat Workboats Ltd, foresees a great future for the company. Interest in the design has been substantial, with enquiries from as far afield as East Africa and the West Indies. 'Our skilled workforce is loyal and hard working, he said, 'and the design seems to fill a niche in the market'.
Interested parties may wish to visit Meercat Workboats’ construction yard during the Seawork 2008 exhibition in Southampton next month. Arrangements can be made by visiting Meercat at Stand 58 during the show.
