Norway's fast aluminium aquaculture workboats

Kåre Holthe & Sønner AS have designed a streamlined aluminium monohull workboat designated ‘Stinger’ that has won praise from local workboat skippers, fish farmers, fishermen, and divers, while at the same time keeping faith with the traditional fishing boat layout that has served them well for generations.
'Atlantic Hogni' is well suited to aquaculture duties and can also achieve 31 knots.

Kåre Holthe & Sønner AS is an aluminium boat building company based in Måneset near Rørvik in the middle of Norway which specialises in custom made commercial fishing vessels.

Age Thomassen, chief constructor said, 'Our customers have been very impressed with our new series of boats designated Stinger in terms of seaworthiness and smooth riding performance. The key lies in the monohull design. However, when designing this vessel our focus has also been on safety both underway at speed and when working from the boat. With the UltraJet waterjet propulsion system we have obtained excellent manoeuvrability and maximum safety for fish farming divers. Also to prevent escapes from cages you need to be really careful when handling the fish, waterjets do not damage or rip the cages.  Divers also have to inspect the cages regularly for holes which they repair and this is where waterjets have the advantage, not only from a safety point, but also because they have the ability to hold station.'

Kåre Holthe boats are easily driven with moderate horsepower, They are thus  economical to run with a good payload, ensuring profitability or the owners. The purpose built aluminium ‘Stinger’ is available in sizes from 6.5m to 15m.

The recently launched‘Atlantic Høgni’s’ propulsive power is supplied by a Volvo Penta D6-370 370 hp diesel engine coupled to a single UltraJet 305 waterjet through a ZF gearbox to return speeds of 31 knots.

A single steering station in the wheelhouse is equipped with Raymarine electronic navigation instrumentation which includes GPS, plotter, radar, depth sounder, compass, vhf radio and under water radio communications, together with a Sony sound system. Large front and side windows ensure the skipper enjoys excellent vision when working. A PTO on the ZF gearbox drives a complete hydraulic system that powers a 300 kg line hauler and bog thruster.

Over 20 versions of the Stinger hull design have been delivered to Norwegian fish farmers and divers ranging from 21ft to 50ft. With aquaculture being the fastest growing sector in the world food economy Kåre Holthe are confident of continuing growth as Norway is one of the world’s largest providers of farmed salmon and shellfish. Norway has a strong tradition of fisheries experience and is ice free throughout the year.
