Markey go massive on the 'SMBC Monterrey'

Seattle USA based Markey Machinery has just installed a massive new electric hawser winch aboard the terminal support tug SMBC Monterrey in Spain.
The SMBC Monterrey will serve LNG carriers at Sempra LNG’s new Energia Costa Azul LNG terminal off Baja California, Mexico.

A two story tall Markey type DESDF-48WF Class III asymmetric Render-Recover hawser winch weighing 56,820 kg was delivered to Union Naval Shipyard in Spain.

Markey teamed with engineers from Industrias Ferri of Spain to install the powerful high speed double drum waterfall winch aboard the 32m, 6,575 horsepower Robert Allan Ltd designed vessel..

When delivered to Moran Towing (USA) and Grupo Boluda (Spain), this terminal support tug will serve LNG carriers at Sempra LNGs new Energia Costa Azul LNG terminal off Baja.

The DESDF-48WFs 760hp makes it the most powerful and responsive winch ever delivered by Markey, and it needs to be. A winch working LNG tankers in a dynamic offshore environment will see conditions very different to the traditional protected harbour.

In high energy environments the winch reacts automatically, producing 75 t/m to 63 t/m tensions and 100m/min speeds in up to 3m seas. Two multi-disc water cooled brakes operate in slip mode during freewheel, function in failsafe as an emergency backup brake, and seamlessly render line above the limits of the electric variable frequency drive ratings. Coupled with advanced instrumentation, this first of four Type DESDF-48WF electric hawser winches employ ARR line control technology, producing safe escort and assist services in port or offshore.

Markey electric hawser winches feature Render-Recover line control as standard. Markey Class I, Class II & II+, and Class III hawser winches carry ratings of 40, 50, 75, 100, 150, 250 and 760hp.
