Jan De Nul in Omani port expansion

An extension has been awarded to an existing contract currently being executed by Belgium's Jan De Nul Group, in a consortium with CCC/STFA, for the construction of a new port and drydock complex at Duqm in Oman.
The Omani government is looking to expand commercial marine activity in the country.

The contract covers the construction of breakwaters and quay walls, dredging, reclamation and slope revetment works. This extension brings the total investment for the new port complex, as executed by the CCC/STFA-JDN Consortium, to 1bn.The additional works awarded cover extending the breakwaters and deepening the harbour basin and entrance channel.

By extending the breakwaters, the port basin will be expanded significantly. The secondary breakwater will be pushed further into the sea, and the main breakwater will be lengthened. Both breakwaters will be extended from 5.3 km to 7.7 km. The harbour basin will be dredged from 16m to 18m and the entrance channel will be deepened by another metre to 19m.

The Consortium has been given an additional two years for the completion of the expanded port complex, with completion now scheduled for May 2012.

The major expansion of the Duqm port complex will create adequate capacity to cope with future expansions, as well as with the handling of larger cargo vessels at the port. The port upgrade will enhance and improve commercial operations at Duqm with an eye on the potentially huge cargo volumes expected to be generated by investments in major industrial, petrochemical, mineral and fisheries projects, as well as a free trade zone planned next to the port.

The Omani Ministry of Transport and Communications is the client for the Duqm port project. Royal Haskoning, in association with Khatib & Alami, are consultants.
