Safety pays in Jervoise Bay

The IADC Safety Award is presented annually to an IADC member company, project or vessel crew which demonstrates exceptional safety performance. The IADC Board qualified the safety performance of the project as outstanding, especially considering the limited execution time of two months, which allowed little room for adaptations during the project.
To ensure safety during project execution, the client appointed an external entity to conduct three audits: Occupational Safety and Health Suitability Audit; Occupational Safety and Health Compliance Audit; and Site Safety Survey Report. During these audits, zero non-compliances were reported, no non-conformities were registered and the project was executed without a single lost-time injury.
On the project itself ISO/ISM/ISPS audits were also undertaken. In addition, a Hazard Identification Meeting was used to identify potentially hazardous events and their impact on people, property or the environment. Last but not least, environmental monitoring and management were carefully considered, especially regarding the sensitive sea grass meadows in Cockburn Sound. Measures to protect these special sea grass species included both water quality and sea grass monitoring. This day to day attention to detail in quality, health & safety, and environment resulted in on-time delivery of the project, creating, as the client described it, 'a culture of safety'.
The success of the FDC project has led to the Jan De Nul Group's involvement in a new project at Port Hedland, Western Australia, which started in August.
Through the Safety Award the IADC acknowledges the positive impact that overall safety has for a project, for the client and for the contractor. The Award aims 'to encourage the development of safety skills on the job and to reward those people and companies demonstrating special diligence in safety awareness in the performance of their profession'. The Award is an expression of the high regard that the members of the IADC have for the health and safety of their personnel, for the environment and for standards of quality in every aspect of the job.
