Denmark moves on fixed link to Germany

A company owned by the Danish Government is expected to be created soon to plan and construct the controversial EUR 5.8bn Fehmarn Belt fixed link between Germany and Denmark, which has finally been agreed.

Officials said the new company will start operations when the Danish Parliament has passed a new planning act during the 2008/09 session to build the 19 km long link. It will probably be a cable stay rail and road bridge structure, but a tunnel also remains an alternative, they said.
However Karsten Holmegaard, the spokeswoman for Femern Baelt AS, set up by the Danish Ministry of Transport and Energy to oversee link preliminary work, said construction itself was still a few years off. 'It is very early days in this project and we have not yet sent any construction projects to tender at all', she told MJ. Officials said the preparations for construction are expected to take three to four years while construction itself would last for an estimated further seven years.
