Thirsty volunteers for Sailors' Society cycle ride
30 Oct 2008
The new sponsored bike ride in Southampton on Sunday 10 May next year will raise money for the Southampton based international charity, the Sailors Society.
The WI ladies, who recently featured on Channel 4's documentary, A WI Lady's Guide to Brothels, are now leaving the TV cameras behind to offer cyclists refreshments along the 10, 25 and 45 mile cycle routes through the maritime city of Southampton and surrounding Hampshire countryside.
Event organiser Helen Trebble said, 'The support and enthusiasm the Sailor's Society has received from Hampshire WI is fantastic and their time and hard work is sincerely appreciated. The ladies do tremendous work for charities in the local community while having a lot of fun. I'm seriously considering joining myself.'
Cyclists and teams of all ages and abilities are welcome to enter the Deloitte and Sailor's Society Cycle which starts and finishes on the waterfront at Mayflower Park on Sunday 10th May 2009. Every cyclist will receive a medal, T-shirt and goody bag. There are also prizes for the highest fundraisers!
The Sailor's Society is also appealing for event volunteers to marshal the cycle routes and to steward at Mayflower Park throughout the day. A full safety briefing with complimentary food will be provided at the Tiffin Club, Oxford Street prior to the event, and all volunteers will receive a T-shirt and refreshments on the day.
The Sailor's Society offers practical support to seafarers and their families. Frequently seafarers face poor conditions, long hours and prolonged separation from their loved ones. Ships are crewed by several nationalities and the feeling of isolation can often be overwhelming. Money raised from the Deloitte and Sailor's Society Cycle will directly fund projects to enhance seafarers welfare in 30 countries and 100 ports in the UK and throughout the world.
If interested in volunteering to help on the day, contact Helen Trebble, Fundraising Events Co-ordinator at the Sailor's Society, on: 023 8051 5950 or email: htrebble@sailors-society.org.
