    Damen Marine Services (DMS) in the Netherlands have broken new ground with the delivery of the first of a series of unique pusher tugs. DMS Blackbird is purpose designed to form part of an Articulated Tug and Barge (ATB) unit and, when necessary, fulfil a range of other functions.

  • 'Fairplay 30' - The most powerful yet for its German owners

    Among several recent news items emanating from the rapidly changing Fairplay Towage group of Hamburg is the delivery of the new tug Fairplay 30, the most powerful to date. The new vessel and a sister ship, Fairplay 31, due for delivery early in 2009, represent a new generation of powerful azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugs designed and equipped to operate effectively in the offshore market and also carry out shiphandling work if required.

  • New BayDelta Tugs Chartered to Crowley

    Among the large number of interesting new tug currently being delivered or under construction for owners in the United States of America are two azimuthing stern drive (ASD) tugs being built for BayDelta Maritime Inc. Heralded as two of the most powerful 30.48m (100 foot) harbour tugs on the US north west coast, it was announced that Crowley Maritime, based in Seattle USA has agreed to charter both tugs.

    Propulsion specialist Schottle GmbH & Co. KG has been reorganized, with a new corporate structure to meet the increasing demands of shipbuilding worldwide. With effect from 29 June 2007, Schottel’s headquarters in Spay/Rhine and Schottel Antriebstechnik GmbH in Wismar have been merged to form the new Schottel GmbH, with its registered office in Spay and branches in Wismar and Hamburg. Schottel Schiffsmaschinen GmbH, also based at Wismar, will continue to develop and manufacture reliable, high efficiency controllable pitch propeller systems as an independent company.

  • Washburn & Doughty Delivers ‘Eleanor F. Moran’

    Another shiphandling tug, typical of the new generation of vessels being produced in the USA to support oil and LNG terminal operations is the ‘Eleanor F. Moran’, delivered earlier in the year to Moran Towing of New Canaan, Connecticut. Currently working in the port of Norfolk, Virginia, the tug was completed by Washburn & Doughty Associates, Inc. of East Boothbay, Maine.

    Transas won the Training Category Award at a ceremony which was part of the revived Safety at Sea and Marine Equipment exhibition (SASMEX) in Brighton UK. The SAMEX Award was presented for the first ever distance simulation based training of oil spill and rescue response operations based in the Baltic region, the GOFMEC Project.

    A metocean design has been completed for the proposed ‘Round 2’ Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm, planned for the southern North Sea off the UK’s North Norfolk coast, just inside the 12 mile territorial limit.   • Dredging Restores Depth at Island Harbour

    Jenkins Marine Ltd and Land & Water Services have been working together on a  challenging project to dredge the Island Harbour Marina in the Isle of Wight. The works, which started in April, are due for completion by the end of this month, by which time some 23,000m3 of dredged material will have been removed and disposed of.
