An international seminar on the Environmental Aspects of Dredging organized by PAO (Post Graduate Education) at the Delft University of Technology, in cooperation with the IADC and CEDA, will be held at Deltares, Delft, on 10 and 11 March 2011.

The course will be led by dredging luminaries Ir. Gerard van Raalte of Hydronamic in the Netherlands and Nick Bray, MICE, of Dredging Research/HR Wallingford Ltd of the UK. Gerard van Raalte is senior expert at Hydronamic, the in-house engineering company of Royal Boskalis Westminster. Nick Bray is director of Dredging Research Ltd and author of the books Dredging: A Handbook for Engineers, and Environmental Aspects of Dredging.

Dredging is a necessary activity in society’s development and under the right circumstances dredging is also an indispensable tool for remedying past environmental interferences. By its very nature, however, the act of dredging and relocating dredged material is an environmental impact. Therefore, determining whether any planned dredging operation will have a positive or negative impact on the environment is of the utmost importance. Evaluation of environmental impacts should examine both the short term and long term effects as well as the sustainability of the altered environment.

During this comprehensive two day seminar, the most experienced dredging experts available will present invaluable information on the interface of dredging and the environment. Participants will be challenged through case studies to apply this knowledge in order to get a full understanding of the scope and significance of the environmental aspects of dredging projects, the management of dredged material, and the effects of environmental guidelines.

The Environmental Aspects of Dredging Seminar is a joint effort of the Stichting PostAcademisch Onderwijs – PAO (Post Graduate Education) of the Delft University of Technology in cooperation with the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) and the Central Dredging Association (CEDA). The seminar is aimed at consultants in dredging related industries and professionals from different governmental bodies such as municipalities, district water boards, port and harbour authorities, and central government.

The course fee is €940 excluding VAT and includes the 386 page hardcover book, Environmental Aspects of Dredging, edited by Nick Bray and published by Taylor and Francis/ IADC/CEDA. Also included are lecture notes, coffee, tea and lunches. Hotel reservations are €110 excluding VAT per night.
