Pelydryn completes Irish surveys – by David Goodfellow
Pelydryn, the Welsh airborne Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) company headed by former UK national hydrographer Dr Wyn Williams, has completed two major surveys.
These were for the Irish INFOMAR (Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland’s Marine Resource) programme and involved mapping of the country’s entire offshore territory on behalf of its Marine Institute and the Geological Survey of Ireland.
Despite delays occasioned by the Icelandic volcanic eruption, operations were completed ahead of schedule from bases at Donegal and Knock airports. In addition to bathymetric surveys of nine bays, work also included terrestrial reviews over land as well as colour aerial photography necessary for integration of data with onshore surveys. Initial reviews of data have already revealed some significant variations from existing charts.
