Fugro OSAE of Bremen, Germany has been awarded a €2.3m contract by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service (NHS) for surveys of a 12,000 sq/km area of the Barents Sea in the northern-most part of Norway, close to the Russian border.
To be completed early next year in depths down to 300m, data will be acquired by the survey vessel, Victor Hensen, using a new high resolution Kongsberg EM 2040 multibeam sounder. Processing of data will be completed aboard the vessel and at Fugro OSAE’s processing centre in Bremen. Work is being carried out as part of the Norwegian government’s MAREANO programme, jointly administered by the Institute of Marine Research, the Geological Survey of Norway and the NHS. Its main aims are the mapping of depth and topography, sediment composition, biodiversity, habitats and biotopes as well as seabed pollution in and around Norwegian coastal and offshore regions.
Fugro OSAE has previously conducted surveys as part of the MAREANO programme in 2006-2010 as well as acquiring high resolution bathymetric data for Norwegian electronic nautical charts.
