US Albanian surveys

28 Dec 2011

Hydrographic surveys of Durres harbour and its approaches in the Adriatic Sea, Albania, are presently being completed by a US Navy Fleet Survey Team (FST) under arrangements with the Albanian government.

The port was last surveyed in the early 1990s by the US Naval Oceanographic Office.

The new data will be used by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the US charting authority, to update nautical charts to support US vessels on port calls to Durres. The Albanian Hydrographic Service, which is based locally, will also use the data to update its own charts. Meanwhile, the FST has deployed a seven person team comprising both civilian and military surveyors supported by a 9m launch for acquisition of sounding and tidal information as well as geodetic information. Further collaborative surveys elsewhere in the region are also planned.
