Durban Harbour project wins award
The South African Institution of Civil Engineering at Durban in South Africa has awarded Mott MacDonald of the UK its ‘Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Award’ for the widening of the entrance to Durban Harbour.
Durban Harbour is South Africa's busiest container port and harbour. Increasing cargo and vessel capacities have required the upgrade of several areas of the port including the entrance. The entrance channel was too narrow and shallow for the modern generation of container vessels so excavation and dredging has been used to widen it by 100m and deepen it to 16m. The project also included construction of a new breakwater, repair and strengthening of an existing breakwater, as well as the enhancement of navigation aids.
Mott MacDonald provided planning and development, site investigation, design, construction supervision and project management services.
