First quay section at Maasvlakte 2 gets wet

29 Sep 2011

In June the first 250m long deep sea quay wall section at the massive Maasvlakte 2 reclamation project in Port of Rotterdam in The Netherlands was dredged free of sand for the first time.

At the beginning of May, the contractor for the project, PUMA, started to dredge the first basin of the new port area. The first section of 500m will be delivered to the Port of Rotterdam Authority in October.

The quay will be used by vessels used for port construction until the first container vessels moor there in 2013.

The concrete quay walls of the future Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) container terminal are constructed in terrain that was raised with a sand-water slurry. Now, after completion of the quay wall, the sand is being extracted by the cutter suction dredger Zuiderklip.

This sand is used to raise other land at Maasvlakte 2 further. Eventually, the Maasvlakte 2 dock will be 20m deep.
