Kirkcaldy Harbour to re-open
Forth Ports Plc has confirmed that Kirkcaldy Harbour in the UK is to reopen to cargo vessels after more than two decades out of use.
Forth Ports said the move will see Hutchison Flour Mill undergo an £829,000 re-construction to allow delivery of wheat direct from ships, the first into the harbour for 20 years.
The work is expected to be completed in a few months, with dredging beginning in the harbour in the spring, and the first cargo expected in the summer.
Hutchison Flour said the project would allow the company to bring in the wheat it requires by sea rather than by road, and would see around 250,000 lorry miles removed from Scotland’s roads. The move could reduce lorry journeys by almost 5,000 a year.
