UK marine safety company Cosalt has secured a major contract to supply its Premier 2010 lifejacket to Caledonian MacBrayne, the largest ferry operator on the West Coast of Scotland.

The contract anticipates the new and more stringent safety at sea Maritime Safety Committee regulations (MSC20(80)) due for implementation this month.

Caledonian MacBrayne sails to 24 destinations on Scotland's West Coast, from Arran in the South to Lewis in the North. Last year the company carried over 4.75m passengers. Cosalt will be supplying a total of 2,200 2400 Premier 2010 lifejackets, including an infant sized version. The products will be distributed to 13 of the 30 vessels in Calmac's fleet over the coming weeks. As part of the contract Cosalt has offered to remove the old lifejackets free of charge.

The Premier 2010, which was specifically designed for the cruise and ferry market, was the result of a three year R&D project that involved over 1,000 hours of in water testing and detailed discussions with  cruise and ferry operators. The product has a patented design neck system that can adjust to the wearer’s neck size so it can be worn by anyone from 43kg up to 140kg while still maintaining good face angles and mouth clearance above the water. The patented reverse angle head support holds the head at the optimum position for maximum in water performance even if the wearer becomes unconscious. The lifejacket self rights in an average of 1.7 seconds.

Cosalt Marine MD Andrew Richards said, ‘Our company has had a long association with Caledonian MacBrayne and we enjoy an excellent working relationship. We supply them with a range of marine safety products, from lifejackets and liferafts to Marine Evacuation Systems (MES), servicing and maintenance contracts. We are delighted that they have chosen the Premier 2010 to satisfy the requirements of the new MSC regulations. ‘
