Pirate attacks have become increasingly common, not least in the Somali region.

Shipping companies are agonizing about the potentially disastrous consequences of deploying lethal force for the safety of their cargos and crews.

A new non-lethal system called the Buccaneer, developed by Cardiff UK based survival equipment specialists, BCB International Limited, offers a solution to a problem that has dogged shipping companies and their crews for many years.

Many shipping companies have resorted to using ex-armed forces personnel to guard their vessels. However, as recent media reports have shown, the militarisation of merchant vessels can end in tragedy. Now crews will be able to deal with an imminent pirate attack without having to resort to the use of lethal force.

BCB International has developed the Buccaneer Launcher to provide a ship’s master with a deterrent system which is simple to install, easy to use and can be loaded and fired in seconds.

The Buccaneer is extremely flexible and can be adjusted to provide a 360º arc on the horizontal plain. It can be used remotely from the bridge or control room quickly and safely. The range of the system improves the chances of a ‘hit’ on smaller, fast moving vessels. Using either compressed gas from cylinders or the ship’s compressed air system, the Buccaneer can deploy anything from a line or netting to snag the propellers of pirate skiffs to solid projectiles up to a range of 300m. Alternative projectiles such as high visibility smoke and splash projectiles can be used for maximum deterrence.
