Macduff Ship Design has been awarded a contract to provide a design package for a new 23m harbour tug to be built by Torgem Shipbuilding Ind & Trade AS, Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey.

The two companies have been cooperating on various projects for over two years and are delighted with the order from Nur Shipping and Trade (part of the Kaptan Group) in Turkey. The design is similar to that produced for three tugs currently under construction in China for Singapore based Pacific Ocean Engineering & Trading Pty (POET).

With an overall length of 23m, beam of 8m and operating draft of about 3.9m, the vessel is being built to Bureau Veritas class. Equipped with two main engines each rated at 1,300 bhp and coupled to a pair of 2.0m diameter propellers rotating in fixed nozzles, the vessel will have a bollard pull in the region of 31 to 35 tons.

Accommodation will be provided for a crew of four in single berth cabins with a spacious mess and galley arranged at deck level.

All four tugs, including those for POET, will be equipped with the unique Mampaey Dynamic Oval Towing (DOT) system. The combination of the DOT system, twin screws, high performance rudders and a heavy displacement hull will ensure the vessel’s versatility and a high level of performance and safety whilst at work.

These vessels will be the largest to date to be ordered with the DOT system. The first DOT equipped tug to enter service worldwide was the Ugie Runner, built for Peterhead Port Authority and also designed by Macduff Ship Design. This latest order highlights the increasing International interest in Macduff designed tugs and the growing reputation the company has as a provider of professional technical design services to shipyards worldwide.
