Crowley Maritime Corporation has established a new Project Solutions group that ties together the company’s experience and assets from across the group, including Jensen Maritime and Titan Salvage.

The group covers just about everything maritime, including Crowley’s diverse fleet of high-horsepower tugs and large deck barges.

For example, its 455 Series of 400’ deck barges provide both the capacity and deck strength needed to accommodate large drilling and production units used for deepwater offshore energy exploration and development.

Crowley also operates a fleet of shallow draft tugs and barges in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in support of the Arctic oil and gas industry. Additionally the company is building four Ocean Class tugboats, each with 10,880 bhp and dynamic positioning, which are scheduled to be in service by 2012.

The Project Solutions provision list is impressive. It includes marine project management, heavy lift barge transportation, ocean towing, project concept studies and engineering management. Operational management, marine salvage, wreck removal and emergency response is available via subsidiary Titan Salvage, along with harbour ship assistance and tanker escort. Another subsidiary, Jensen Maritime, brings in naval architecture, marine engineering, vessel design and construction ability.

Project Solutions also embraces international container, breakbulk and petroleum shipping and full service logistics, including specialised project cargo freight forwarding from subsidiary Jarvis International Freight.

However, Crowley points out that it can also evaluate customers' overall project requirements to determine which services and assets it can bring to the table, whether they are company provided or from third parties.

The idea, says Crowley, is that it can serve as a single point of responsibility aligning the efforts of designers, contractors, and others to achieve project goals. The team will manage the scope of each project, including identifying problems when they are still small enough to solve. “By starting early in the conceptual and planning process, the value added to the customer in efficiencies and cost savings can be significant”, said the company.

Tom Crowley, chairman, president and CEO added that the move will allow Crowley “to help customers transform ambiguous projects into ones that are focused, productive and deliver tangible results".
